About Wine Route Blinds: shading for homesteads and cellar doors

Wine Route Blinds measures, makes and fits window shading along the Stellenbosch Wine Route, on the Simonsberg and Banghoek roads, in Devon Valley and across the Bottelary hills. Every product is built for one opening in one building, whether that is a homestead sash window, a guest cottage or the wide glass of a new cellar-door extension.

Glass built to hold the view

Nearly every farm along this route carries the same pattern: an old lime-washed core with small, deep-set windows, and a newer cellar-door, tasting-room or guest-cottage wing built almost entirely of glass to frame the vineyard and the mountain. Nearly every problem window is one somebody deliberately made larger, which makes a blockout roller the instinctive answer and usually the wrong one, because it fixes the glare by removing the reason the room was built. View-preserving sunscreen fabric is specified for that glass as the default, and the rest of the range is set out in the order we work through it on a measure: what hangs inside the glass, what goes outside it, and how you drive the lot.

Inside the glass that means roller, day and night, venetian, vertical and panel, cellular, concealed and skylight blinds. Outside it means external venetians and roller shutters, with folding-arm awnings and zip screens over the terrace. Motorisation and automation tie the lot together, with a wind sensor standard on every motorised awning or screen on an exposed terrace. Child-safe tensioners are standard on every corded product, and hardware is specified for a working farm.

Four wards, read separately

We measure and fit across the full route, and the four wards each bring a genuinely different brief. Bottelary is open, low and dry, the warmest ward with little mountain shelter, where tensioned screens and external shading do the work. Devon Valley is a small sheltered basin that traps heat the wind never quite reaches, where a retractable awning and external shading stand on equal footing. Simonsberg-Stellenbosch reads the mountain directly, square morning sun and an early afternoon shadow line, where tilting slats win. Banghoek climbs the Helshoogte Pass, the highest and wettest ward, where damp picks the material and the pass funnels the wind.

The order of a job never changes

Send the enquiry, by the form or the chat on this site, and tell us about the homestead, the cottage or the cellar door and what is actually bothering you about the light or the heat. One of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to fix a date for the free in-home measure, timed around a harvest calendar and a functioning tasting room rather than an empty show house.

On site a consultant arrives with samples and measures every opening properly, the original sash frame and the new glass wing both. Exposure at that exact position on the route is read, the fixing substrate and the roof are checked, and fabric, mesh openness and control are chosen against the light each opening really gets through the afternoon. A written quote follows, itemised per window or door, with no pressure to decide on the spot. Once it is approved the work is built to order for your openings, fitted by hand, left tidy, and run through with you before the team drives off.

What we will not do

We will not guess a figure down the phone or price anything from a description or a photograph; the measure at the property comes first, every time, and the per-window figures are put in writing before anything is cut, with lead times confirmed in that quote. Our roller shutters are shading products that handle the sun, the heat and the glare on the outside of the glass and black a room out into the bargain; a security-rated product is another thing entirely, quoted on its own only if you ask. The guide is not a heritage or planning opinion: where permits come up we flag that a step exists, and the decision belongs to the relevant authority.

Book a measure at your own gate

Fill in the enquiry form or use the chat, and one of our expert consultants will contact you shortly to arrange a free in-home measure, every opening measured and a written quote per window, with nothing owed and nobody pushing. There is no call-centre hold music; a real consultant calls back to arrange a time that suits the farm. Nothing you send is used for anything beyond arranging that call-back, and it is held in line with POPIA. Take the free guide and go no further if that suits you; that is a perfectly good outcome too.
